Additional Information: This article provides an indepth theoretical discussion of the way in which narrative is conceptualised in relation to a more general ethnographic theory in Hymes' work, based on a review of three recent major studies by Hymes. The paper is the first to engage with this topic and is also the first to systematically address Hymes' notion of 'function' in relation to linguistic/narrative form.
