Additional Information: This article draws on findings from the DfES funded longitudinal VITAE project of which I was co-director, to address the research literature on teacher identity. It argues, in contrast to much of the literature, that identities are neither intrinsically stable or intrinsically fragmented but rather vary over time and circumstances
