Additional Information: The paper draws upon collaborative action research projects undertaken in partnership with schools and LEAs in the UK and provides insight into the international debate regarding the development of critical thinking and education for democracy. The focus on religious education constitutes an important contribution to the research and evidence base for pedagogy in this aspect of the curriculum. The theoretical basis of the paper is in the pragmatic epistemology of Peirce, James and principally Dewey and the role of inquiry in the generation and translation of knowledge. The history of the development of the paper from collaborative classroom based research with a network of religious educators, publication of articles in professional journals and a resource book that is cited extensively in locally agreed syllabuses for RE to an academic article also exemplifies pragmatic principles.
