Additional Information: The paper reports on the development by the researchers of a coding system for analysing pupils' questions in the primary classroom. The coding system was devised in the context of a project with primary teachers in 4 schools evaluating the impact of using a community of inquiry approach to stimulate question generation. The coding schedule proved to be consistent across the contexts of the different schools and inter-rater reliability was also established between university researchers and teachers. The paper demonstrates that there has been a lack of tools that can enable the types of questions pupils asked to be investigated despite the evidence in the research literature in support of the importance of questioning in learning. The coding schedule has been used by teachers nationally and also adapted for use in a number of different contexts including schools in Singapore and Hong Kong. The article was selected in 2004 for reprinting in a Routledgefalmer Reader in Teaching and Learning edited by Ted Wragg.
