Additional Information: This article draws on reserach examining the impact of the media coverage of September 11 on individual and collective memories and identities. The reserach was part of a larger collaborative international project funded by the British Film Institute, ESRC and Open University. I presented a paper at the international conference 'After September 11: TV News and Transnational Audiences', which precipitated the publication of two papers: Burke, PJ (2002)‘Fear of Difference amplified through TV news consumption’ in Equal Voices, European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia, Issue 10 and Adams, M and Burke, PJ. (forthcoming) ‘Media Narrations of September 11th: formations of identification and boundary-making’. Journal for Ethnic and Migration Studies, Spring 2005
