Additional Information: I provided the theoretical baseline for this co-authored paper, which addresses space as an agentive (not just 'background') factor in sociolinguistic processes and their outcomes, notably issues of competence and evaluative stance vis-a-vis multilingualism. The paper is driven by original fieldwork data, documenting neighbourhood ethnography, and feeds these data back to an innovative revisiting of Goffman and Bourdieu. The theoretical implications, especially with regard to notions of competence, are momentous, and the paper has already been cited numerous times and has been applied in research by others. In that sense, it has immediate relevance for education.
