Item Type: Article
Additional Information: This article addresses issues of inequality in relation to 'grassroots literacy' - sub-elite literacy often characterizing subjects from Third-World countries. The data are handwritten statements produced in the context of the Belgium asylum procedure, and the analysis shows that literacy is an obstacle rather than an opportunity for the subjects. The article addresses theoretical issues in multimodality, literacy studies, and critical theory.
