This paper sets out an international review of literature and practice concerning listening to and consulting with young children, drawing together published literature with practice examples. The review was the first mapping exercise of this scope in an emerging field. The paper is an invited contribution to a special issue of this international journal, on children’s perspectives in research. d. e. The international review included articles, reports and material for practitioners covering all countries where English language literature is available. This was supplemented by commissioned reviews of literature and practice in Denmark and in the Netherlands. The case studies of practice were identified from a sample of fifty Childcare Audits carried out by local authorities in England.
