Additional Information: This paper provides a rigorous review of research on multimodality and literacy. It is significant in the way in which it theorises the new conditions for and conceptions of literacy and the relationships between New Literacy Studies, Multiliteracies and Multimodality. The paper describes the scope and focus of multimodal research to show the impact of multimodal theory on pedagogy, design, student literacy worlds, curriculum knowledge and learning. Throughout it draws out the questions and issues raised by a multimodal approach and discusses these in relation to the research literature. The paper concludes by outlining the limitations of a multimodal approach and discusses future directions in this area. The paper was reviewed by the editor of REE and double-blind peer review.
