Additional Information: A philosophical essay, it identifies two dominant approaches in contemporary 'philosophical' writings on higher education and draws attention to certain of their weaknesses (either inward-looking or limited in time and scope). The paper goes on to uncover and argue for a space for large philosophical work on higher education that has a universal character. (This paper has received the most 'hits' on the publisher's web-site for the Journal in which it appeared.)
