Additional Information: This is the first study to examine the relation of mental ability test scores at age 10 years with alcohol problems and alcohol intake at age 30 years. Using data collected for the 1970 British Birth Cohort study we provide evidence from a prospective longitudinal study comprising a national representative sample. After adjusting for potential mediating and confounding factors we found that cohort members with higher childhood mental ability had an increased prevalence of problem drinking in adulthood. This association was stronger from women than men.
