Additional Information: In this paper, published in a prestigious international journal, we revisit data set out in 2002, where we proposed a model for the micro-evolution of mathematical knowledge. In this publication, we foreground the design of the software, including a novel heuristic in which the designer develops representations of target knowledge that can be used as controls over the software. We articulate in detail the design process, demonstrating a dialectic relationship in which not only does the design shape learning in the conventional sense but also learning shapes design.
