Additional Information: The English student funding system is predicated on the accumulation of student debt while average student loan debt on graduation is rising, and will continue to do so, with increasing tuition fees. This article is the first of its kind to examine rigorously how fear of debt and financial constraints affect prospective students’ choices of where and what to study, using data derived from a survey of just under 2000 prospective HE students.
