This article is based upon a keynote lecture delivered at the 27th annual conference on teacher education and reform. (Association for Teacher Education in Europe, Warsaw 2002.) It documents the reasons for the diversification of routes into teaching within England after 2000 and then describes each route and begins to evaluate the initial impact. As a lecture it was translated simultaneously into two other languages and attended by over 200 delegates. It was then selected from the keynotes to be published in one of the host country's education journals. The article is of interest to anyone wanting to know more about the development of the range of pathways into teaching, many of which have now become established career entry pathways.
