Additional Information: This locates Peters' account of intellectual study for its own sake as the core of education within a tradition stretching back to early radical Protestantism. Religious justifications of an encyclopaedic knowledge-based curriculum gave way to psychological and then philosophical justifications of intellectual education, including those of Peters and HIrst.
