|Additional Information:||This article sets the scene for a two-part special issue on foreign language teaching as an evidence-based profession in a journal ranked by an analysis in System 32 (2004), pp. 357–361 as 6th most prestigious foreign language teaching journal internationally. Based on an analysis of pervasive aspects of recent UK educational policy, this article problematises the role of evidence in policy decisions and the professional practice of foreign language educators. It concludes that evidence-informed practice is predicated on breaking up the dichotomy of researcher versus practitioner.|
