|Additional Information:||Theoretical article for a Brazilian academic journal exploring the political dimensions of pedagogy in the new genetics and problematising the teaching of socio-scientific issues by science teachers. Drawing on research from the Valuable Lessons report the article argues that understanding of bioethics as taught in schools is impeded by a predominantly reductionist discourse. The article has been refereed. As result of article I was invited as a keynote speaker to the Congresso Brasileiro de Qualidade na Educacao held in Brasilia in November 2001 under the auspices of the Brazilian Ministry of Education.|
