Additional Information: This report resulted from research commissioned by the Wellcome Trust to identify the opportunities and impediments for teaching controversial issues arising from biomedicine and biotechnology to 14-19 year olds. Completed questionnaires were received from 305 schools and further education colleges in England and Wales followed by extensive semi-structured interviews with 111 teachers across the curriculum in twenty institutions selected from the questionnaire responses. Interviews with the teachers drew on analyses from the questionnaires. Interview transcripts were thematically coded by groups of researchers and inferences inductively derived. Conclusions from the report had a national impact and were widely discussed on the BBC website. Conclusions also led to further research commissioned by The Wellcome Trust on interdisciplinary collaboration. The report is widely cited and is the first to cover the teaching of controversial socio-scientific issues with such an extensive range of teachers. Before publication the report was refereed and modified as a result. The lead author was solely responsible for writing the article. This report resulted from research commissioned by the Wellcome Trust to identify the opportunities and impediments for teaching controversial issues arising from biomedicine and biotechnology to 14-19 year olds.
