Additional Information: Originality: The first study to test the concordance between historical diagnostic thresholds for autism from the 1960s and contemporary thresholds. Rigour: A novel analysis was conducted to examine concordance between experts familiar with the 1960s rating scheme, a contemporary research team and current ICD-10 criterion. Published in one of the leading epidemiological journals. Significance: The study found less discrepancy between historical and contemporaneous threshold than anticipated with a high proportion of current cases meeting historical thresholds; consistent with the possibility that a real increase might have occurred.
