||My contribution to this short work (50%), is concerned with the development of listening skills in instructed foreign language settings. Information processing models of comprehension rooted in cognitive psychology provide the theoretical framework for discussion and the presentation of ideas is strongly grounded in research findings from the fields of L1, L2 and FL learning. Principles for the design of effective tasks emerge from the discussion of theory. Tasks from published materials are critically evaluated. An approach to the development of listening skills which promotes holistic language learning rather than discrete skill is favoured.
