||a. Physical punishment of children b. Normative theoretical approach utilizing investigator led semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analyses compared frequency and severity of physical punishment in two- and lone parent families, taking other factors into account. c. This was the first paper to take a child-centred view of the extent of physical punishment and look at the child’s total experience of punishment from both parents. It was also important in refuting clinical findings suggesting that children of lone parents were at increased risk of abuse. d. e. Findings were based on data from a randomly selected representative community sample of 498 parents from 399 families, including 57 lone mothers, with a high response rate (80%). Key measures were either of known validity and reliability, or reliability was assessed and demonstrated to be high. f.
