Additional Information: Masterson was the PhD supervisor of the first author. The study was the first to show that the 'release from interference effect' (reduction of low frequency irregular word latency disadvantage under conditions of concurrent memory load) is determined by reader skill, thereby constraining theories of printed word processing. M. Hayes was supported by a University of Essex scholarship.
