Additional Information: This is a propospective longitudinal study involving colleagues from City University, and St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare. The findings have important policy consequences for stroke care empahsisng the imporatnce of combating loneliness and having a good quality social network. The work was supported by the Consortium for Healthcare Research of the Health Foundation.
