Additional Information: This is an invited article co-written with the Director of the Royal Geographical Society, on the emerging, complementary roles of two subject organsiations in developing the subject in an educational context and supporting teacher development. Its publication predates and has informed deliberations leading to the Action Plan for Geography (and the appointment of its authors as co-advisers to the Secretary of State for Education and Skills) and the creation of the Council for Subject Associations (CfSA).
