||a) Environmental and sustainability education b) Philosophical investigation c) Argues that there are serious problems associated with taking sustainable development as a policy and proposes the idea of sustainability conceived as a frame of mind as a more defensible and productive approach. It is further argued that sustainability so conceived is intrinsic to authentic human consciousness and some of the metaphysical issues raised for education and late modern society are identified. d) An early version of this paper was presented at ECER 2000 and subsequently it formed the basis of a 24 hour seminar held at the University of Bath in 2001, the proceedings of which were published in a special issue of The Trumpeter. Journal of Ecosophy in 2002. It has been cited in a number of places and was also reprinted with responses in 2006 in a special issue of Environmental Education Research Vol 12 (3-4) Researching Education and the Environment: retrospect and prospect.
