||The paper reports on new interviews with children involved in the Assisted Places Scheme in the 1980s and now in their late thirties. It uses sociological perspectives to make sense of their reported experiences in school and subsequently. This follow up study allows the authors to consider the longer term impacts of the APS and to investigate the social processes which have contributed to variations in outcomes for those who took part in the APS. Although the APS has been disbanded, the findings of report are highly relevant to current policy debates concerning access of more disadvantaged pupils to high status educational settings.
