Additional Information: Philosophical discussion examining work of Harvard philosopher Stanley Cavell - especially his essay on Shakespeare's Coriolanus - in relation to questions of democratic participation and citizenship. The analysis demonstrates the significance of this examination for questions concerning teaching, learning and the curriculum. Originally a keynote paper the Annual Conference of the Mid-Atlantic States Philosophy of Education Society, with a response from Rene Arcilla, at New York University, October 2003.
