Abstract

This paper discusses different models of the reading process, with a particular reference to reading in a foreign language. It challenges the prevalent view in EFL of reading as a top-down process. It focuses on the importance of bottom-up processes of decoding and word identification, suggesting that teachers need to focus on ways in which automaticity of bottom-up processes can be developed in order to help their learners become more efficient readers.
