Abstract

This paper looks at the way in which one poem, 'Richard Cory', has been used in EFL teaching using the 'gapped sentence technique' and examines the methodological principles that can be extrapolated from the lesson described. It provides evidence from teachers' reflections on lessons and from learners' work during these lessons about the way in which the learners process the task that they have been given. The pedagogical principles refer to the appropriateness of the text, the appropriateness of the task and to the match between text and task.
