Abstract

This is an article about reading circles, about adult reading development and about what emergent adult readers (and reading circle members) can tell us about the mysteries of novel reading. It is also an article about what reading circles can tell us about adult learning. It is based on small-scale qualitative research carried out in London with a group of adult literacy learners in 2008-2009 and will argue that reading circles are both real-life, time-honoured literacy practices and ‘ideal’ forms of adult education (Duncan, 2012).
