Abstract

The data set is an original output, being the first test of mathematical cognitive ability in the teenage years which has been made available for this very widely-used multidisciplinary longitudinal study. The Arithmetic test is a rigorous examination of the diverse areas of arithmetical skill. It contains 60 items, focusing in turn on arithmetic calculation, fraction-to-decimal conversion, division of decimals, long division, percentages, means, ratios, raising to powers, square/cube roots, geometric/arithmetic progressions, probability, distributions/histograms, combinations/permutations, calculation of areas of geometric figures, simple algebraic equations and logical deduction processes. The significance of the dataset has been demonstrated through its use by a great many researchers who are well-established in the field of cognition, educational attainment and associated life-course outcomes. 32 researchers downloaded the dataset in the first year it was available (2009), and the number has risen every year since, showing growing international interest within the research community: 41 in 2010, 45 in 2011 and 48 in 2012. These include researchers based in the UK, USA, Australia, China, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Russia, Belgium and Canada. An example of a recent publication using the dataset is: Duncan, G. J., Bergman, L., Duckworth, K., Kokko, K., Lyyra, A.-L., Metzger, M., Pulkkinen, L. and Simonton, S. (2012) The Role of Child Skills and Behaviors in the Intergenerational Transmission of Inequality: A Cross-National Study, in J. Ermisch, M. Jäntti and T. Smeeding (eds) From Parents to Children: The Intergenerational Transmission of Advantage, New York: Russell Sage Foundation.
