Additional Information: This paper is currently available only on my website. A previous version (also on the website) has been very widely cited (in, for example, collections arising out of the International Basil Bernstein Symposia). The 2005 version extends to the production of the first comprehensive and fundamental critique of Bernstein’s work that reveals, for example, the flaw at the heart of the theory, that is, in the conflation of different levels of analysis that is committed via the recruiting of the categories, classification and framing. The paper also contrasts the theoreticism of Bernstein’s schemata with my own dialogical (theory/empirical) organizational language. Elements of this language are introduced and deployed in original analyses of mathematics education and research education. There is no other work in existence in the English language literature that has achieved such an original, comprehensive, yet constructive criticism of Bernstein’s theory.
