Additional Information: Moving between policy and classroom practice, this paper examines the history of “multicultural literature” as an identifiable strand within the secondary English curriculum. The relationship between texts, teachers and school students is explored, largely through the analysis of a single lesson in a mixed ability GCSE class in an urban comprehensive school. The analysis suggests that students’ encounters with literature in the classroom involve complex negotiations of identity and difference and that these encounters can contribute towards their understanding of and engagement with the wider world.
