Additional Information: This article makes a significant contribution to thinking about issues of inclusion, equality and social justice, with specific reference to the field of English studies. Drawing on empirical evidence in the form of classroom observation and samples of secondary students’ writing, it provides a critical examination of government policy on the curriculum, and particularly on the concept of choice in its application to a stratified curriculum offer.
