Additional Information: 1.Presents analysis of lived reality of young people's experiences of government-funded apprenticeship programmes and their perspectives on the academic/vocational divide. 2.Contributes to theories of young people's decision-making and argues they are ill-served by: a) the inadequate information and guidance system; b) the highly varied quality of work-based provision; and c) the constant interference by policymakers in a system that requires greater stability, investment and coherence. 3. Draws on interview, focus group and survey data from the first cohort of young people (16-25 year olds) to enter the government-funded Modern Apprenticeship programme in 1994/95 in England and on a study of 10-16 year old school pupils who participated in a curriculum initiative to develop 'personal effectiveness' and 'employability skills'.
