Item Type: Book
Additional Information: This work provides a new theory of discourse, drawing on a wide range of traditions (critical discourse analysis, anthropological linguistics, sociolinguistics, Foucault, Bourdieu) and arguing that a critical approach to discourse is one that is methodologically grounded in ethnography. The book is original and innovative, it combines several methodologies and types of discourse data (oral and written, informal and institutional) and introduces several new concepts, in an architecture in which fundamental theoretical discussions are supported by rich empirical case discussions. It has been very favourably reviewed and is used as compulsory or recommended reading on numerous courses worldwide. It is relevant to education for it questions the nature of communicative competence in light of a fundamental examination of linguistic resources, i.e. of assumed potential versus real potential in language usage.
