Additional Information: This book has been well received in applied linguistics circles, having been reviewed very favourably in at least six major referred journals. It is a both unusual and novel dissection and re-analysis of previous second language acquisition research, which aims to make the case for a more socially informed approach to the field. Such an approach would be based on social theory and sociolinguistics, and would complement already well-developed cognitive and linguistic traditions. The book imaginatively examines what the key terms in Second Language Acquisition - ‘Second’, ‘Language’ and ‘Acquisition’ - might mean in such an approach.
