Additional Information: Conference paper initially presented at the British Educational Research Association, University of Exeter, September 2002. The paper, based on a University of London-funded study involving in-depth interviews with PGCE students, explores the different forms of reflective practice identified by respondents and the factors identified by them that either promote or hinder constructive reflection. Consideration is given to the many 'gazes' and 'calls' to which (student) teachers are exposed, and introduces a psychoanalytical perspective into the analysis in considering the extent to which teachers' actions, perceptions and experiences are influenced by their desire to satisfy or please a range of 'others'.
