Additional Information: This is the first chapter in the published proceedings of the seventh mathematics education research seminar (MADIF7), Stockholm, January 27-27, 2010) and was delivered as the opening plenary address of the conference, though the chapter is able to cover rather more ground than the address that was delivered orally. The chapter introduces, but also develops in several important ways (made explicit in the paper and including several original analytic schemas and the 'fetch/push' description of curricular action) my 'social activity method' that is deployed in a number of contexts including the analysis of a particular mathematical problem in plane geometry.
