Additional Information: This chapter is based on data collected in classrooms over three years using an ethnographic approach. Incidents are identified which suggest children are interested in the mathematics being considered, even if they do not conform to unwritten classroom rules. Links are made with the literature concerning classroom subcultures. This work is relevant to the on-going debate about support for children who appear to be low attainers in mathematics.
