Additional Information: This article draws on ethnographic data collected in three different primary mathematics classrooms over the course of two years. The article considers children's behaviour using the advice of Margerison and Rayner who advocate the use of observational data to gather information with the intention of knowing what a pupil does, how often and in what situations. this approach was used to consider the circumstances in which children apparently refused to cooperate and opted out of the tasks set. findings suggested a strong relationship between the opting out and the task children were supposed to be working on. A model was put forward to suggest circumstances in which children were likely to opt out. The article was published in a peer reviewed journal which is ead by both academics and teachers with an interest in supporting pupils with special needs in mainstream schools.
