Additional Information: Based on a new theoretical framework in which the micro-methodology of descriptive linguistics is seen as imbued with language ideologies, this big paper engages in an empirical analysis of a corpus of descriptive-linguistic studies on Congolese languages. In a historical context in which Bloomfieldian linguistics became dominant, these studies appear to offer 'artefactualised' images of languages. These artefacts were of great historical importance: often they were the 'birth certificates' of languages.
