Additional Information: The chapter forms part of an international review of current theory and practice in the development of self-regulation in learners. Contributors include leading researchers in the field such as Erik de Corte, Paul Pintrich and Barry Zimmerman and represent US, Europe, Australia and Singapore. My chapter builds upon my research into the use of the community of inquiry to change patterns of interaction in classrooms and to promote metacognition. The parallels between the process of inquiry/metacognition/self regulation are explored and examples drawn from classroom based research to elucidate key points and to illustrate practice. The chapter is also linked to a research collaboration with Singapore Centre for Teaching Thinking at Nanyang Technological University with whom I have worked for a number of years.
