Additional Information: This article was an invited submission for a special edition on civic engagement and higher education edited by Professor John Annette. It is the only historically-themed paper in the edition and reflects the growing interest by contemporary researchers in the roots of the university public engagement movement. The paper draws on high quality, innovative research including analysis of archival materials in an important new collection of a student organisation as well as a witness seminar (oral history group interview) with leaders of the student movement, 1960s-1980s.
