Additional Information: A policy oriented academic article examining how we should measure school performance and the implications for policy from statistical issues arising from league tables. Part of a special edition and likely to have higher impact as a result. Unlike the official league tables, we allow for the fact that schools can be differentially effective for children with differing levels of prior attainment. For the first time, we quantify the extent of such differential effectiveness in English secondary schools.
