Additional Information: This article demonstrates the significance of a recent development in philosophy termed inferentialism for addressing the challenges faced in teaching statistical inference and for statistics education more generally. The article explains the theoretical insights arising from Robert Brandom's philosophical work and illustrates them though empirical research tracking the teaching of statistics in secondary classrooms.
