Additional Information: The human race currently faces the greatest danger in its history. Our main concern is no longer the origin of species but the death of our own - from a variety of threats - overpopulation, climate change, biological, chemical and nuclear actions, reactions and accidents. This article is highly original in employing an historical perspective to outline a new concept of education for survival. It has already attracted much interest and a shortened form will be published in Forum in February 2010.
