Additional Information: One of the key on-going debates in environmental education research and practice is between educational perspectives that emphasise teaching of science concepts and those that more actively link environmental and social issues. This article is based on research which used an ethnographic approach to explore debates about the content and aims of education programmes by conservation NGOs in a rural community in Costa Rica. The work is original in terms of the research methodology used, and the journal is considered one of the most important publishing venues for work in the field of environmental education. [The article has now been through the proofing stage and should be published shortly.]
