Additional Information: This paper reports empirical work in secondary school classrooms that was funded by EPSRC. The work reported is novel in its use of a tangible technology with teenage language learners to help them report to their teacher their emotions whilst learning German. The technology develops previous research on the self-reporting of emotions during learning in its provision of a private communication tool for learners to communicate with their teacher and a representation for the teacher of the changes in the emotions of the learners in his class during their language learning lesson. The results from the empirical study demonstrate the value of the approach and act as a catalyst for further research questions. The article is part of a special journal issue and is the only UK authored paper in this issue - other papers are authored by leading North American researchers including authors from M.I.T.
